The Last Light of Durin's Day

Welcome to the second installment of my review! If you haven't read it, here is the first installment.

Thrice Welcome- The reactions of Bard's daughters when they first see the dwarves is pretty funny, even if the way the dwarves got into the house was a bit weird. I don't really remember much else during this part of the movie.

Girion, Lord of Dale- It was cool for them to show what was going on in Laketown when Smaug was taking over the mountain. I thought it was interesting that everyone was chewing Bard out because his ancestor, Girion, was the one who tried to kill Smaug the first time and missed. At least he tried to kill the dragon. No one else seemed to think about that part.

Durin's Folk- The tapestry was pretty cool and so was the prophecy that Bard recites when he figures out that Thorin is indeed the King under the Mountain. I just love hearing that poem.

In the Shadow of the Mountain- It was sad that they left four of the dwarves behind, as that wasn't in the book, but I loved how Fili refused to go without Kili and ended up staying in Laketown. I hope they find a way to rejoin the Company in the next movie.

A Spell of Concealment- Dol Goldur was kind of creepy, but I loved Gandalf fighting the Necromancer and I also loved listening to Benedict Cumberbatch speak.

On the Doorstep- When the thrush knocks. The dwarves thought that they had lost their only chance to enter the mountain, but Bilbo didn't give up so quickly. I know that it wasn't the light of the moon that revealed the keyhole in the book, but it was still cool. And then Thorin just barely catches the key. That was close.

The Courage of Hobbits- Bilbo really did find his courage. At the beginning of the movies/book he seems to be the kind of hobbit who would be scred by his own shadow, but now he will fight to protect his friends even if there isn't much he can do to help them. :)

Inside Information- Once again, I don't remember much of what happens here.

Kingsfoil-  Lotr flashbacks. Anyone else experience this? It seemed like they were recreating the scene with Arwen and Frodo. Oin's reaction to the elvish medicine was pretty cool. The dwarves and elves might not like each other, but if they would get along, they could help each other out a lot.

A Liar and a Thief- Smaug. Benedict Cumberbatch. Enough said. Okay, now I sound like a fangirl. But that's because I am. Just not as much as some of my friends. ;) (You know who you are.)
As he did with the Necromancer, Benedict fit perfectly into the role. He was Smaug. He even did the motion capture for him. Benedict went to a zoo and watched the lizards so he would know how act when he played Smaug. :)

The Hunters- This must when the orcs figure out that most of the Dwarves are not in Laketown and leave to find those whom they are after.

Smaug- It's pretty cool to watch Smaug maneuver around on his gold going after the Dwarves and Bilbo. It was a but hard to believe that being that close that much heat and fire that no one would have any burns or any signs that they had been almost burned to death, but it is a movie, so I guess I'll just have to get over that part.

My Armor is Iron- It was a bit weird for the statue to stay standing for as long as it did before it covered Smaug, but it was still cool to see what the Dwarf smiths would have been working on before the dragon attack.
Smaug flying up in the air and then spinning and sending golden raindrops everywhere and then darting off towards Laketown was pretty cool also.
I had thought maybe we would see more of Smaug in Laketown in this movie, but it was a nice cliff hanger.

"I See Fire"- I know this is technically in the movie, but it is in the soundtrack and it's a really cool song so I'm going to included it. The first time I heard this song, before I saw the movie, I didn't like it that much, but after seeing the movie, it fit in perfectly and is now one of my favorite songs.

Beyond the Forest- This must be the song that plays as the end credits finish.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the movie. Maybe I can blog again soon!

  1. Great review! I really like how you laid it out with the soundtracks. That was a brilliant idea. :) It seems we all pretty much agree on the movie, and especially on Benedict Cumberbatch... cough cough cough.
